Frequently Asked Questions

Why buy a lightweight porcelain grave marker?

While the traditional granite headstone has been the standard in grave markers for years, there are a few problems with them in Alaska and other northern rural areas.  First, they all come from out of state, adding high shipping costs due to their weight of 175 pounds per cubic foot. Small headstones may weigh less than 200 pounds while larger multi-piece headstones are often well over 1000 pounds.  Our deluxe porcelain marker and post weighs just under 10 pounds. The optional reinforced 12x12x4 inch concrete base is 42 pounds.

Second, granite headstones may take months or a year or more to arrive in Alaska.

Northern Impressions can usually deliver a proof for approval within one week and the finished product within two weeks.

Third, Alaskan soil is not always stable.  After only a few winters, heavy granite monuments may settle, especially ones that do not have large concrete or stone bases underneath (often left out to save costs).  Nearly every cemetery in Alaska has multiple crooked headstones leaning due to settling.

Our light weight post mount system eliminates this problem.

What size does my photo need to be?

What is your turn around time?

For the best quality, your photo must be at least 300 dpi. But the larger, the better. We can crop and edit your photo as requested.

Our turn around time is typically 1-2 weeks once the design proof has been approved, plus shipping time, if applicable.

Can the stones be outside?

Can the porcelain be outside?

Yes! All the stones we use are natural and the paint in the engraving is a specialty monument paint made to withstand the weather.

Yes! The images on the porcelain are baked into the glaze. The images will never fade or scratch.
